Project Overview

A designated smoking point in Huangshan Scenic Area, Anhui, China, required a fixed electronic lighter station for visitors using an outdoor mountain trail during winter.

The equipment was installed beside an exposed pedestrian route, where the electronic ignition module and internal wiring could be affected by snowfall, mountain wind, condensation, melting snow and repeated temperature changes.

To protect the electrical components while keeping the lighter visible and convenient to use, the project adopted a hinged waterproof enclosure with a transparent protective cover. The completed installation provided a practical solution for public electrical equipment operating in a cold, snow-covered scenic environment.

Project Requirement

The smoking area was located beside a mountain walking route in Huangshan Scenic Area. Because the station was positioned outdoors rather than inside a visitor center or covered shelter, the lighter and its electrical connections required additional protection from the surrounding environment.

Snow could accumulate around the installation during cold periods, while wind could carry fine snow and moisture toward the operating panel. When temperatures increased during the day, melting snow could create water runoff around the signboard and mounting frame. The moisture could later freeze again when temperatures dropped.

The scenic-area operator also needed the electronic lighter to remain easy for visitors to identify. A fully opaque electrical box would have hidden the equipment, while installing the lighter directly on the signboard would have left the device and wiring permanently exposed.

The selected enclosure therefore needed to balance four requirements:

  • Protect the electronic lighter when it was not being used
  • Keep the operating panel visible to visitors
  • Allow convenient front access
  • Support regular inspection and maintenance

Cold-Weather Installation Challenges in Huangshan

Outdoor electrical equipment in a snow-covered mountain environment faces different operating conditions from equipment installed inside buildings.

Snow and ice may collect around hinges, latches and cover edges. If the enclosure is mounted too close to the ground, accumulated snow can obstruct access or remain in contact with the cable-entry area.

Condensation is another important consideration. Differences between the internal temperature of the enclosure and the surrounding cold air may allow moisture to form inside the assembly. Cable entries, mounting holes, custom openings and unused ports therefore require careful sealing.

The installation also had to allow the transparent cover to open freely. Sufficient space was retained above and in front of the enclosure so that accumulated snow or nearby structural parts would not restrict the movement of the lid.

Hinged Transparent Enclosure Solution

A front-opening waterproof enclosure with a transparent cover was installed around the electronic lighter module.

The transparent lid allowed visitors to see the equipment before opening the enclosure. It also allowed scenic-area staff to check the position and condition of the lighter during routine patrols without opening the box unnecessarily.

When the station is not in use, the cover remains closed over the operating panel. Visitors open the lid, activate the electronic lighter and close the enclosure after use.

This operating sequence is important because the enclosure provides its strongest environmental protection when the cover is completely closed. During use, the internal lighter module is briefly exposed to cold air and possible wind-driven moisture. The ignition unit, cables and internal electrical components must therefore also be suitable for the intended operating environment.

The hinged design keeps the lid permanently attached to the enclosure. This reduces the risk of a removable cover being dropped into the snow, placed on wet ground or lost during strong wind.

External latches provide convenient access for both visitors and maintenance personnel. The enclosure can be opened from the front while the main body remains securely fixed to the smoking-area structure.

Mounting and Internal Arrangement

The enclosure was mounted at a practical standing height on a stainless steel support frame. This position made the lighter easy to reach while keeping the electrical equipment above snow accumulation near ground level.

The electronic ignition module was secured inside the enclosure body rather than being attached to the moving transparent lid. This reduced repeated movement of the electrical wiring whenever the cover was opened.

Sufficient clearance was retained around the operating panel so that the lid could close without pressing against the lighter module. Space behind the equipment was reserved for terminals, cable routing and strain relief.

The support frame also kept the front of the enclosure unobstructed. Scenic-area staff could release the latches, open the cover and inspect the internal equipment without removing the signboard or dismantling the complete station.

For a cold outdoor installation, the cable jackets, seals and cable glands must remain suitable at low temperatures. Components that become rigid or brittle in winter may place additional stress on the wiring or reduce sealing performance.

Why the Transparent Cover Was Important

The transparent cover served both an operational and maintenance function.

Visitors could immediately recognize the electronic lighter station without opening an unknown electrical box. The visible front panel also reduced the need for additional operating instructions around the smoking point.

During daily inspection, staff could check whether:

  • The electronic lighter remained correctly positioned
  • Snow or ice was blocking the cover
  • The latches and hinges were operating normally
  • Visible moisture had entered the enclosure
  • The front panel showed signs of damage

The enclosure only needed to be opened when cleaning, testing or electrical maintenance was required.

Installation Result

The completed station provided a clearly identified electronic lighter for the designated smoking area in Huangshan Scenic Area while reducing continuous exposure of the electrical components to snow and moisture.

The transparent cover kept the equipment visible, the hinged structure supported repeated public use, and the front-opening arrangement allowed maintenance personnel to reach the ignition module and wiring without removing the supporting frame.

Mounting the enclosure above the lower snow-accumulation area also improved accessibility during winter operation. Staff could inspect the equipment from the front and remove snow around the hinges and latches when necessary.

The installation created a defined service point for the electronic lighter, terminals and power wiring. Maintenance work could be completed without dismantling the smoking-area information panel or the stainless steel structure.

A similar enclosure arrangement can be used for:

  • Public smoking-area electronic lighter stations
  • Mountain and forest park service equipment
  • Outdoor emergency call devices
  • Trail control and information equipment
  • Public switches, buttons and operating panels
  • Outdoor charging and power modules
