IP67 Waterproof Junction Box for a Residential Barrier Gate
An outdoor barrier gate at a residential community entr

Project Snapshot
An outdoor barrier gate at a residential community entrance required a protected and accessible connection point for its camera, control and communication wiring.
The installation included a boom barrier, a vehicle recognition camera mounted above the gate pedestal, and electrical cables routed between the field devices and the internal gate controller. Because the equipment was installed beside an open driveway, the connections could be exposed to rain, humidity, airborne dust and water splash during road cleaning.
A BOWO Electric AG Series waterproof junction box was mounted on the side of the barrier gate to protect the cable terminations and keep them separate from the mechanical drive compartment.
The customer’s name, exact location and installation date have not been disclosed. This case is therefore presented as an anonymized residential entrance application without using unverified project information.
Why the Gate Wiring Needed a Separate Enclosure
A barrier gate pedestal normally has limited internal space. The motor, transmission components, controller and power connections already occupy much of the available area.
Adding camera power terminals, communication connections and external cable joints inside the same compartment can make the wiring difficult to inspect. It may also place electrical cables too close to moving parts or require technicians to open the complete gate housing whenever a camera or control circuit needs attention.
In this installation, the external junction box created a dedicated service point beside the gate.
The camera cable and barrier-related wiring could be terminated inside an accessible enclosure without crowding the motor compartment. The arrangement also allowed the installer to organize the conductors around terminal blocks rather than leaving cable joints loose inside the pedestal.
The mounting position was equally important. The box was installed above the concrete base and away from the movement path of the barrier arm, helping reduce exposure to standing water, passing vehicles and mechanical components.
Why a BOWO AG Series Junction Box Was Used
The BOWO AG Series waterproof junction box is manufactured from high-quality ABS and uses a screw-fixed cover. The published product specifications include IP67 protection, IK08 impact resistance, CE and RoHS compliance, and a stated operating temperature range of −40°C to +80°C.
The series is available in multiple enclosure dimensions, allowing the box size to be selected according to the number of terminals, cable diameters, bending space and available mounting area. This is more practical than using one standard enclosure size for every barrier gate installation.
For this type of application, the enclosure should provide enough internal space for:
- Terminal blocks and cable identification
- Separation between power and signal wiring
- Cable gland locknuts
- Safe cable bending
- Future inspection and terminal retightening
Choosing a box that only just fits the terminals can make installation difficult and leave insufficient working space for future maintenance.
Installation Details That Improve Outdoor Protection
The junction box was fixed vertically to a metal support plate mounted on the side of the barrier pedestal. The support plate provided a flat installation surface and avoided drilling close to the internal motor and drive assembly.
Three cable routes entered through the bottom of the enclosure. Bottom cable entry is useful for exposed vertical installations because water is less likely to collect around the cable openings or travel directly into the box.
Each entry should be fitted with a waterproof cable gland matched to the outside diameter of the cable. A gland that is too large may not compress tightly enough around the cable jacket, while an undersized gland can damage the cable or make assembly difficult.
Unused cable openings should also be closed with suitable sealing plugs rather than being left exposed.
Inside the enclosure, the power, control and communication conductors were arranged so that technicians could identify and inspect the circuits without opening the main gate housing. Sufficient clearance was retained in front of the box, allowing the screw-fixed cover to be removed without dismantling the camera bracket or barrier mechanism.
IP ratings are defined through standardized enclosure tests under IEC 60529. However, the performance of the completed installation still depends on correctly fitted cable glands, sealed unused openings, an undamaged cover gasket and proper mounting.
Result of the Installation
The completed installation provided one accessible connection point for the barrier gate and vehicle recognition camera wiring.
Routine electrical inspections can now be carried out at the external junction box instead of opening the section containing the motor and mechanical drive. The bottom-entry cable arrangement also keeps the wiring organized and reduces direct exposure of the entry points to rain and road-cleaning splash.
The practical benefit is visible in the installation itself: electrical terminations are enclosed, separated from moving equipment and positioned where maintenance technicians can reach them more easily.
This type of configuration can also be used at apartment entrances, commercial parking areas, factories, schools and other locations operating outdoor boom barriers, access-control cameras or vehicle identification equipment.
Selecting a Junction Box for a Barrier Gate Project
When selecting an IP67 junction box for a barrier gate, buyers should consider more than the external dimensions of the enclosure.
For a suitable product recommendation, provide BOWO Electric with the following project information:
- Required internal or external enclosure dimensions
- Number of incoming and outgoing cables
- Outside diameter of each cable
- Terminal block arrangement
- Preferred cable-entry direction
- Available mounting space
- Required IP and impact protection ratings
BOWO Electric can then help match the application with a suitable AG Series enclosure size and cable-entry arrangement.
